History of Lewis

This section contains material written by Angus about various aspects of the history of his island, from earliest times to the 20th century. It is divided into three subsections, the most extensive of which reflects Angus's strong interest in the interlinked themes of land ownership, clearances and crofting.

Although the documents are concerned mostly with the history of Lewis in the broader context of the Highlands and Islands, and of Scotland as a whole, they contain numerous references to Angus's local area. Thus there is overlap with the content of other sections, in particular with those dealing with the history of Pairc and Calbost.

Whilst the essays dealing with ancient history are written from an objective standpoint, Angus's political views are evident in much of the material he wrote about more recent times.
